How to Name Your Event Catering Business

July 29, 2009 by Butterfly Filed under: Branding

One of the important first steps when establishing your catering business is choosing a suitable name. A name is central to your business branding and marketing efforts so you should put some time into coming up with a good one. Here are some things to think about.

Going with a name that includes the owners name is a good way to go, especially if you already have a name for yourself in the food and beverage industry. A name gives customers the feeling that they will be getting reliable and personalized service from an owner operator.

Don’t make the mistake of limiting your company by putting the name of your suburb or town in your company’s name, as you may want to expand beyond the area after a few years in business.

Having a name that clearly states exactly what it is that your company does is also a good rule to follow. Including the word ‘catering’ in the title is a good idea but be careful about being too specific as to the type of events that you cater to. If you put the words ‘wedding catering’ in your business name you won’t have much flexibility if you wanted to expand into corporate events further down the road.

The key is having a name for all purposes that will remain relevant no matter which direction you decide to take your company in the future.

Your company name should help you to stand out from your competitors so it should be easy to remember and it can even be a little humorous or catchy.

Remember that once you are underway in the catering business it is really difficult to change your company name. A change could mean not only expensive changes to your stationary and marketing materials but also negative effects on the brand power that you have built up. And in the worst-case scenario a name change can lead to customer confusion and you may lose some of their trust.

A great name will get your catering company off to the best possible start, help it to grow and could eventually become your company’s most valuable asset.
