How To Create A Logo For Your Business

August 24, 2011 by  Filed under: Branding

Logo design is important when building the face of a business. It is used for inspiring trust, recognition and admiration for a company. This is essentially the symbol or text that will make you memorable and create a brand for clients to remember you by.

When creating a logo, there are 5 simple steps that you need to follow in order to design a great logo.

1. Simple
A simple logo design allows for easy recognition and allows the logo to be versatile and memorable. A nice logo needs to feature a design element that is unexpected or original, whether it’s within the text you use or a symbol.

2. Memorable
Following closely behind the principle of simplicity, is that of memorability. An effective logo design has to be memorable, and this is achieved by having a simple, yet, appropriate logo. Do research in your industry and look at other companies to find ways to set your company apart from the competition. Find out what you want your logo to symbolize with your company with the use of composition, shapes and font. Remember, simplicity allows for better memorability.

3. Timeless
A strong and effective logo has to be timeless and will stand the test of time. Will the logo still be effective in ten, twenty, or fifty years?

4. Versatile
An effective logo needs to be able to work across a variety of mediums and applications. For this reason a logo should be designed in a vector format, to make it definite that it can be scaled to any size. The logo must work in colour and black and white.

5. Appropriate
The way you position the logo has to be appropriate for its intended purpose and be reflective of the industry that you are in. Do extensive industry research and look at other companies and see their logos and how that applies to that specific industry. If you are looking to use a creative font, try to use something that is easy to read, and not overly complicated. It’s important when choosing a font that you use something that reflects the company’s personality and is suitable for the specific industry it’s being created for. For example, If you are creating a logo for a daycare centre, you can use a fun, youthful font and a cartoon illustration for the logo. However, you would never use that for a law firm. Be aware of the type of industry, and create something that is appropriate and yet unique.
