Google Dominance Vs Yellow Pages Dominance

With the technology age slowly taking over, businesses are switching up their approach to advertising. The decision about whether to advertise via the Web, through sites like Google, or to advertise via a locally circulated paperback, like the Yellow Pages, is one that must be made.

After doing a local area search for businesses that specialize in Computer Repair, I noticed quite a difference in the results that formulated when using two different mediums for searching for companies.

The Top 10 Google Results for Companies that specialize in Computer Repair near 32514 were:

1. Geek Squad – Best Buy (one national ad)
2. Tech Advance – 1508 Creighton Road, Pensacola, FL, 32504
3. Dr. Geeks Computer Clinic – 200 Beverly Parkway, Pensacola, FL 32505
4. Computer Guy – (no address, only a local phone number)
5. Sargent Computer Service – 1040 Stillbrook Road, Pensacola, FL
6. Karl’s Computer Service – (no address, only a local phone number)
7. Fast Teks – one national ad, they come to you
8. Gulf Coast Computers – 406 Deborah Lane, Pensacola, FL
9. Pensacola Computers – Services 32501-32514, comes to home
10. Computer Masters – 3829 North 12th Avenue, Pensacola, FL

The Top 10 Yellow Pages Results for Companies that specialize in Computer Repair near 32514 were:

1. A Plus Discount Computer Repair
2. A to Z Computer Services
3. AT&T Connectech
4. ASC Inc
5. Bates Mobile Computer Service
6. Blessed Praised Computer Repair
7. Bright Light Computer Service
8. C&M 3Pak Technologies
9. Chief Computers
10. Claude’s PC Repair

I called the businesses on each list and found that 8 of the 10 companies that chose to populate the first 10 spots in the Yellow Pages, were businesses that had been around for more than 9 years. Whereas, 9 of the 10 companies that chose to populate the first 10 spots in Google were less than 7 years old and/or were nationally recognized businesses.

I also found that 8 out of the 10 companies that populated the first 10 spots in Google were run by people under the age of 35, whereas 9 out of 10 companies that populated the first 10 spots in the Yellow pages were run by people over the age of 40.

Lastly, it is obvious to see that in the Yellow Pages, businesses are listed alphabetically, so businesses with large advertisements or that are first on the alphabetically get seniority over other businesses.

With the information provided – it is easy to conclude that the older business ran by older people utilized the Yellow Pages, as it once was the main source for business information search, and the newer businesses that are ran by younger people are utilizing Google, as it is now the main source for business information search. It is also easy to conclude that smaller businesses are now struggling to keep up, now that larger companies are able to afford ad space and SEO (search engine optimization), they also are able to dominate Google searches.
