CCNA Career Questions

Let’s face it, this is not the late 1980s/early 1990s when computers where only used by geeks. From the days of MS-DOS to Windows 3.1, things got a lot easier for the users to navigate and use their computers. But it was still hard to install drivers since standards where almost non-existant and the user graphical interface was not refined yet. So I am sure you can imagine how much more difficult it was to manage the new big thing which was networking the computers together. Back in those days it was Novell NetWare and you had to know about NLMs and such. At that time computer networks were pretty tame. Cisco just came out with their 8 port 10 baseT Catlayst switch for $9,600 and then Cisco came out with the revolutionary Cisco AGS router. But at that time there was no Cisco CCNA certification to speak of to actually guide you on how to properly architect a network. Actually it would not be until 1998 when Cisco debuted the CCNA certification.

Not the easiest thing to administer even if you were not a computer geek. But luckily for us computer geeks, it allowed us to make a good living. Well computers practically run themselves now days to anyone can be a help desk tech. Microsoft certified associates are a dime a dozen. So how do you take the next step up and stand apart from the crowd in your career? Supplement your Microsoft certification with the Cisco CCNA certification. Why you may ask? Well lots of people know how to click big icons to configure Win7 and even Active Directory. People can configure VPNs with their Linksys routers, but how many people actually understand down to the packet level how computers communicate? Not many! But that is what you will learn when you study for the CCNA exam.

As you progress through your CCNA studies, you will truly understand how client and server application talk together. These are the things the senior administrators understand and is valuable in troubleshooting the 3rd tier tickets. Simply knowing how to plug in an IP address into a client to direct it to the backend server, anyone can do. But who can troubleshoot when the data gets lost? These are some of the skills you will obtain during your CCNA studies.

Ever wonder how your data really makes it around the world in depth? What really controls the traffic out on the Internet? What about in your company? How is the data controlled? These things get very tricky and you start to get confused why the Internet has core routers and large companies usually do not have routers at their core, but they have switches. So why? Questions, questions, questions. It all really depends on the size of the company, the network and there is no one right answer. But these are some of the things that will wet your appetite when you start to study for your CCNA certification.

So back to why you want to get your CCNA certification. You need something to set you apart from the tons of other IT professionals. You can’t be an engineer in any IT aspect if you don’t have at least a rudimentary understanding of how TCP/IP works which is 65% of the CCNA exam in one way or another. S o if you want to make the big dollars and you want to be an Active Directory engineer, you will need to know how to control the traffic between your sites. How do you do that? Know how data moves across the network and how to control where it goes. How can you do that? Via your CCNA, you will learn how to influence data path via metrics used by the various routing protocols such as OSPF or EIGRP. Then you may even combine those with Access Control lists you place strategically on router interfaces going either in or out to further control what people can access.

You probably were thinking I know how to configure a Linksys router, I know how computers communicate. But if you don’t fully understand the concepts we just discussed above, it probably clearly illustrates that the Cisco CCNA certification would be beneficial to you. There is so much more as I only touched on a few CCNA exam concepts above. But it is really an exciting career path. Once you get started, you will want to continue on to your CCNP certification and ultimately to your Cisco CCIE certificaiton in which engineers routinely start at over $120,000. That is quite a bit more than the $30,000 you can hope to make as a run of the mill Microsoft help desk administrator.
