Be a Better Boss

June 29, 2010 by  Filed under: Management

Being a better boss is more difficult than ever – and more important. With four generations – it is challenging as each group has its distinct characteristics, values and attitudes toward work, based on that generation’s life experiences. The four generations are:

• Silents (Born between 1925 and 1945)
• Baby Boomers (Born between 1946 – 1964)
• Generation Xers (Born between 1965 and 1980)
• Generation Ys or Millennials (Born 1980 – )

To be a better boss to these generations, managers need to learn each generation’s values, attitudes and work styles. As the remaining Silents retire, management needs to replace their strong commitment to teamwork and collaboration as well as their high regard for developing interpersonal communication skills. Simultaneously, Baby Boomers are seeking challenging ‘postretirement careers,’ in other venues, while Gen Xers demand challenging, but balanced work and family life, and Millennials are demanding perks in exchange for loyalty and technological savvy. Thus, managers need to find creative ways to recruit and retain talent.

Tips every manager can use to become the kind of boss each generation can respect.

• I will do what I say I will do.

• I will show respect when communicating.
